DARKNESS WITHIN by Isabel Lucero **Release BOOST**

Darkness Within Banner
Darkness Within
Title: Darkness Within
Author: Isabel Lucero
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: November 28
Goodreads
  Synopsis
The moment it happens, everything in me changes.
Imagine somebody was able to fit inside of your body. Their arms are the same length as yours. You’re both the same height. Everything is exactly the same. Now imagine that person not being a person at all. That thing inside of you is a shadow. Darkness. A silhouette of you, only living on the inside of your body. It doesn’t have a conscious. It doesn’t have a heart. Nothing within that darkness is remotely human. Its only goal is to take over your body. It fights against your muscles. It tries breaking through the skin. It wants to replace you. That’s what it feels like when the darkness that lives inside me starts trying to get out.
I feel it happening. The pressure builds. My skin prickles. And the only thing that tames it, getting it back to resting peacefully inside me, is to unleash it. I have to let it wreak havoc, and I quite enjoy the mayhem.
Analeigh Price comes into my life and does the one thing I hate; question me about my past. She can pretend she wants to get to know me all she wants, but she’s not ready for the truth. I won’t become a better person for her, because I am who I am. She can't fix me, because my wounds are unfixable.
You see, I’m not like everybody else. Oh, no. I’m different. My humanity was stripped from me long ago, and those who are responsible are about to be paid a visit. You’ve never heard a story like mine, because I’m unlike anyone you’ve ever met. I’m no hero. I’m the guy you don’t want to piss off, because once the darkness within me is unleashed, it’ll be too late to get away.
What’s my name? It’s Donovan. Donovan James. But the darkness is taking over, and it’s only good at one thing, so I must go.

I narrow my eyes at her. “How old are you?”
“Old enough,” she counters.
“I don’t like that answer,” I say, settling back into my truck, ready to drive off.
“Wait, wait,” she says, putting her hand on the window frame. “If you’re gonna be a baby about it, geez. If I’m at college, I’m clearly at least eighteen. Which is legal, by the way.”
“Eighteen is too young. Legal or not.”
“Well, lucky for you, I’m not eighteen. I’m twenty. I’ll be twenty-one next month.”
“Hmm,” I murmur. “Good for you.”
“And you?” she asks, leaning in closer through the window with a flirtatious smile gracing her lips.
“Twenty-four.”
“See. That’s perfect! We can have fun together.”
“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” I ask. “You were flying across the street like the cops were after you.”
She laughs. “Well, if they were, wouldn’t you want to help me escape them? We’ve been in the road for five minutes. They could be coming any minute now,” she says, playfully widening her eyes in a panic.
“I don’t need to be an accessory to anything, so no, I wouldn’t help.”
“You’re no fun,” she says with a pout.
“I told you.”
“Come on,” she whines. “Take me somewhere.” She leans in and I find myself leaning closer to her. Her brown eyes watch mine, waiting for me to object, but I don’t. I feel her lips touch my neck, but barely. She’s just brushing them against my skin, and then she whispers into my ear. “Take me somewhere and you can take me however you like.” Her voice drops to a husky whisper and my cock responds. She licks and kisses my neck, her free hand running across my stomach and towards my jeans. “Don’t make me beg,” she breathes into my ear. Her hand cups my cock through my jeans, and she moans.
“Get in,” I growl.
She hurries around to the passenger side and climbs in, throwing her book and messenger bag to the floor board before scooting next to me. I drive off, needing to find somewhere to pull over, because I’m not taking her to my house, and I don’t feel like looking for a hotel room right now. Whatever we do will be in my truck, but I don’t think she’ll mind since she’s unbuttoning my jeans.
“I want to taste you,” she says seductively. “Can I?” she asks, unzipping my zipper like she already knows I’m not going to stop her.
I lift up, helping her pull my jeans down a little, and then she sticks her hand inside of my boxer-briefs, pulling my hard cock out through the slit in the front. She strokes it a few times, before lying across the seat and putting the tip in her mouth.
“Fuck,” I groan, trying to concentrate on driving and getting us to a spot where I can park and not be disturbed.
“Mmm,” she moans around me, taking me deeper.
I pass a for sale sign and turn off onto a side street, hoping to find the empty house. When I do, I pull into the driveway and cut off the engine, hoping the neighbors don’t look out their windows and get suspicious.
She releases my cock from her grip and sits up to start pulling her clothes off. First she removes the black V-neck shirt and then shimmies out of her tight, blue jeans and white panties. I slide over, away from the steering wheel, and remove my shoes, jeans, and underwear as fast as possible.
“I don’t have a condom,” I manage to say as she begins to climb onto my lap.
She reaches down to her bag and pulls a shiny square of foil out, holding it up with a grin on her face.
“You have everything you need in there?” I ask, lifting a brow as she rips it open and pulls the colored condom out.
“Mmhhmm,” she murmurs, placing it on my head and rolling it down over my shaft. I groan and throw my head back as she strokes me.

Prologue

Kenzi one day old
Toren fifteen years old

“We want you to be her Godfather,” Asher says as he gently lays his newborn baby into my arms. I have to tear my gaze away from her spellbinding eyes to look up at him from the chair I’m cradling the baby in.

“Me?” I repeat, glancing over at Ember in the hospital bed, who beams back at me with a tired, yet genuine smile.

“Yes, you,” they both say at the same time. “If it wasn’t for you, we probably never would have met,” Ember adds, grabbing Asher’s hand. “And we wouldn’t have this beautiful little baby. We know you’ll always protect her.”

“That’s right, man. You’re Uncle Tor now.”

I’m an uncle. And my two best friends are parents. And we’re all fuckin’ under sixteen.

But Kenzi Allyster Valentine would change us all forever. She needed us.

“Wow. I’m honored, guys. No doubt, I’ll always be here for her.”

I kick back the pang that hits my stomach. I didn’t get the girl…but I got something better that I never expected. A gift in the form of a little tiny hand wrapped tightly around my finger, huge eyes like gems staring up into mine like I was the most amazing person in the friggen’ world, and the first glimpse of what I could already tell was going to be a heart-stopping smile.

At that moment, a connection was born.

That was it.
She owned me.
My niece.
My god-daughter.
The love of my life.

Jogging up the stairs to the second floor, I sneak into the back row of the classroom. I pull out my laptop and quickly catch up with the professor’s lecture. The guy a couple seats down passes a syllabus over, and when I turn to thank him, I’m reminded that nothing comes easy in my life.

“Is there a reason you were holding my girlfriend’s hand?” Ella’s boyfriend whispers, sliding into the open seat between us.

Well…shit.

“She won’t be your girlfriend for long,” my cockiness answers for me. My arrogance is a great intimidator that’s always worked in getting me what I want.

“Who are you?”

As his beady eyes try to daunt me, I get an up close look at him. I can see why El might have fallen for him. He’s a safe bet. Probably riding the coattails of his family’s money, paving his way with his arrogant little bitch frat brothers. It only assures me of one thing. I don’t have to fight him for El. This guy wouldn’t start a fight if I fucked her right in the middle of his bed. El is just a trophy to him. He doesn’t love her like I do.

“I’m just an old friend. We have a long history together.” I glance at him from the corner of my eye, offering him a quick wink.

His knuckles whiten as he clenches his pen. It couldn’t be more satisfying, knowing I’m getting under his skin.

His annoyed expression tells me that Ella hasn’t been so open about her life and her past. This guy doesn’t have a shot.

“She’s taken, so keep your hands to yourself.”

A few heads flip around after his voice heightens.

Not needing a professor to hate me on day one, I lean in closer to whisper in his ear, “I can’t make any promises. It’s nothing personal, believe me, but technically, she’s always been mine.” I ease back against my chair right as the professor’s eyes catch mine.

Liam’s head whips around, and I wait for him to ask me to take our discussion outside. But he cowers, like I knew he would.

“Try to steal her away from me, and see what happens,” he says.

“I’m not going to have to try hard. Your time with her was over the moment she saw me.”

The professor forcefully clears her throat, eyeing us. If we don’t end this conversation soon, we’ll both be kicked out.

“Don’t be so cocky, asshole. The fact that I don’t know anything about you, and the fact that she’s never mentioned your name, show what she really thinks of you.”

“You two”—the professor points, and a hundred pairs of eyes turn in our direction—“since you’re so chatty, maybe you should be conducting the lecture this morning?” She crosses her arms over her purple blouse and waits for our answer.

“Sorry, Professor Knight,” Douche Bag says.

“Sorry,” I say.

She nods and starts the lecture back up again, her eyes continuing to linger on us.

He slides over to his original seat.

I strike my earlier thought. I have no idea what El sees in this weak shithead.

I lean over the now vacant chair, testing my luck one final time. “Don’t worry. I’ll be around. We can continue this conversation soon.”

He scoffs me off, shaking his head. His fingers start tapping on the keys of his laptop as he accepts his defeat for this round.

"Welcome to Conti's. I'm Lia and I'll nguhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I froze. Directly facing me was Olympic swimmer, Jay Morningstar…and I just made an idiot of myself.

The rest of the table looked up to see my standing there with my mouth practically gaping. His coach, who I recognized from TV interviews, and even two other swimmers from the Olympic team. They didn't say anything, they didn't even blink.

"Uh…I mean…"

I couldn't even put together my words and Jay Morningstar was just staring at me with that Wheaties box smile and those icy blue eyes.

What was I supposed to say? Sorry I just made a weird noise, it's just that I have a poster of you on my wall where you are wearing nothing more than your gold medals, a smile, and a pair of man panties?

Snow in Texas didn’t happen.

The weather report said that we were supposed to get significant snowfall, but I told Jay that the weatherman was usually wrong so there was nothing to worry about.

This was one of the first times that Jay was going to hang out at my house and nothing was going to ruin that for me.

Or so I thought.

I'd cleaned everything from top to bottom a million times over and made sure my parents would both be at the restaurant along with Sonny.

Jay was just coming over to watch a movie, but I couldn't wear my usual "lounging" gear of sweatpants. It took me forever to figure out what to change into after school and put on extra deodorant.

Staring at myself one last time in the mirror, I thought I could pull off looking half way decent. I smoothed out my sweater and touched up my lip gloss.

Okay, so maybe I wasn't a Christy Quinn with a great fashion sense, but hey, a sweater and jeans weren’t that bad.

The doorbell rang and I bolted down the stairs only to feel something warm and squishy underneath my sock-clad feet.

I winced, not wanting to look at what I stepped in, but as soon as Nonna's goat walked into the foyer, I knew it was exactly what I thought it was.

"Nonna! What is Capra doing in the house?"

Nonna shuffled into the foyer and looked down at my feet then at Capra, swatting him on the butt and swearing in Italian. Capra snorted and turned around, dropping another big pile of little pellet poops on the ground before she sauntered toward the living room.

I put my hand on my head and looked between the new pile of poop, the one on my foot, and the door where Jay was standing behind the stained glass door.

I didn't even have any time to panic. I whipped off my socks and turned, cracking the door open slightly, trying to put on my biggest smile. "Um, hey, Capra had a little bit of an accident, so I'm just going to clean it up before you come in. Okay?"

Jay raised an eyebrow. "Um. Okay?"

I shut the door again and then raced my socks to the laundry room, throwing them in the wash then moved as fast as I could to clean up the new piles.

I let out a deep breath before I opened the door again to see a smiling Jay. He always found a way to look better than me, no matter what he was wearing. His hair was still wet as if he just got out of the shower, or maybe the pool, and he smelled of soap and cool mint. I tried not to let my eyes wander at the way his thin black t-shirt clung to him with moisture still on his chest, but there is only so much a girl can resist.

Or maybe he was freezing and I was the jerk that didn't let him in because I was cleaning up goat poop.
