Excerpt
I couldn’t quite make eye contact with Ethan since the last time I came back to the apartment with Owen before Thanksgiving break. We caught Ethan naked in the hallway—on a date and thinking they had the place to themselves for a night. I was no prude, but seeing junk not belonging to my boyfriend turned me three shades of red. I hadn't even seen Owen's, but I . . . felt it . . . a lot. On my leg, against my stomach, sometimes rubbing my back if he was holding me from behind. Why I was so bashful I couldn't say, especially since I didn’t have a cherry to pop. But it was only one guy and only one time, shortly before he shredded my heart and then stomped all over it. Even though I couldn't make my virginity grow back, I wasn’t quite ready to go there again. However, not being ready for sex had absolutely nothing to do with wanting it. Our time together always ended with a scorching kiss and groping against the nearest wall. Owen’s Southern gentility was probably wearing thin these past few weeks. “Owen? The movie starts in a half hour!” I called as I strolled down the hallway. “Hey, City. Give me a minute, practice ran late.” Owen had just stepped out of the shower and was dripping freaking wet. The V on his hips disappeared into a towel cinched around his tapered waist. Water traveled from the stray tangled locks at his neck and trickled down over his ripped chest and his abs before disappearing into the bunched up material at his waist. I licked my parched lips and tried to remember how to speak. How many damn abs did he have? Six? Eight? I was gaping at a wet, half naked Owen while the corner of the bastard's mouth turned up in a smirk. I didn't have the faculties to scowl back. My tongue didn't want to work unless it was tracing the water trails across Owen's body. “Keep looking at me like that, baby. We won't be going anywhere tonight.”

Is love worth the risk? Even if it means breaking a promise you made to your best friend? And if it is worth the risk, will you let it happen? Can you get past all the bad things that have happened in your life?

I loved observing the different friends, and couples seeing how things seemed to click so perfectly for them. So many of them seemed to be in flawless sync and looked as if they were made for each other.

The first person to catch my eye and hold it was the one person I had secretly hoped would be there. But he was the very same person I had hoped wouldn’t. Ford. He was wearing a pair of red swim trunks, which accented his tan more than I had seen. He was throwing a Frisbee with another guy whose name I didn’t remember.

He stopped when he saw me climbing in the back of a truck that belonged to Shay’s dad and smiled as he walked over to us. The guy that he was playing with followed suit and kept his eyes on Shay without moving.

“Elise.”

“Ford.” I smiled.

“Have you met …”

Shay spoke up. “Luke.”

Luke smiled.

“Nice to meet you, Luke.” I smiled. He smiled back.

“Ya’ll ready for a swim yet?”

Shay answers for both of us. “Yes.”

“Ahhh … Thank you but no, not yet.”

“Your loss.” She hopped off the tailgate and swayed her hips to the water where Luke gladly followed her. He didn’t seem to take his eyes off her for a minute.

Ford sat beside me, and I was trying every trick in the book not to look over at him.

“This is Deer Creek. I’ve been coming here for as long as I can remember.”

“It looks amazing.”

“Like you,” Ford says sweetly.

“Thank you.”

I looked up at him and saw the sweetness of Ford Kelly.

We heard screams and yells and laughs as Shay and Luke were playing in the water. He seemed to be acting as if he was going to throw her in. Others were making their way to the creek and laughing.

“You ready to get in?” Ford jumped off the tailgate and extended his hand.

I resisted but every part of me wanted to grab the olive branch he was trying to extend.Jesus Christ, Elise, not everyone is like Bryan. And Ford most certainly wasn’t anyway.

I jumped off the tailgate resisting his hand, and he put it down seemingly frustrated. Who could blame him? I was a looney toon, and I knew it. I removed my tank top as fast as I could getting ready for my next move.

“Last one to the water has to clean the pig pen tomorrow.” And I took off running. I ran faster than I have ever run even through the giggles and the urge to turn around and see how far Ford was behind me.

I made it to the water before Ford and turned around with my hands on my hips to announce and rub it in his face I had won. I had actually beaten a running back. From what Shay had said, he ranked third in the state of Texas. I was pretty impressed with myself.

He walked up to me in the water and stood right in front of me. He wasn’t the least bit out of breath and smiled watching me enjoy my victory.

“I WON! I beat the fastest running back at Humble.” I did a little victory dance.

He moved a little closer to me.

“This is the thing, Elise … with me … I would always let you win. You would always be first.”

My heart started to ache. That was the sweetest thing a person had ever said to me.

“Really?”

“Most definitely.” He focused his eyes on me almost leaving me lost in a trance. I felt like I couldn’t turn away. And what was worse, I didn’t want to.

“Wait! You let me win?” I asked. I put on a mad face so he would think I was serious.

“No … well, yes … well …”

“Well, what?” I asked.

Luke swam up behind me. “Of course, he did. So he could see your ass as you ran like I did with Shay.” Shay splashed Luke and jumped on him to push him under.

“Is that true?” I asked.

“Absolutely not,” Ford said while he was nodding his head.

I walked toward the barn to a voice that was humming, and admittedly, my curiosity got the better of me.
In the barn, I found an unfamiliar girl attempting to milk a cow and struggling pathetically. The girl couldn’t carry a tune but not from lack of trying. She looked extremely out of her element trying to do her best but failing miserably.
I stood back and observed her frustrations. I knew very little about how to run a farm, but she seemed to be downright confused.
I leaned up against the barn door and listened to her trying to make heads or tails of what she was humming until it suddenly came to me.
I joined in and began whistling along with her, and she jumped. She kicked over the bucket, and I watched the milk spill on the hay. “Damn it! For all that is holy!”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt you.” But not really. I laughed.
She stood up to brush herself off, along with wipe the remainder of the milk and hay that were on her clothes and face.
She stomped over to me but stopped before getting too close. “What do you want?” she snapped at me. She put her hand on her hip.
“Nothing!” I stuck my hand out to shake hers. “I’m Ford.”
She looked down at my hand and smirked leaving my hand hanging.
“What can I help you with?” she demanded.
“Well, since you are clearly not from around here, we like to introduce ourselves first. It’s polite.” I smiled at her.
She rolled her eyes unimpressed.
Terry came walking around the corner huffing like he was already losing his breath.
“Oh, Ford! I see you found Elise.” He looked at me and then back at her. “What in all of Hades happened to you?” He laughed a beat then realized she wasn’t happy and cleared his throat.
“So it’s Elise. Nice to meet you.”
